Honest truth is I don’t know that much about Blood Orange. Damn I’m not even sure if they’re a group or a dude (Blood Orange is a dude). All I know about them comes from one album I enjoyed immensely from 2013, Cupid Deluxe. In fact that album fell off my radar. I’m listening to it now and I’ve fallen in love with it again. I’ve stated before that R&B related music is not my favorite kind of music. So when I love an R&B album, I really love it. Frank Ocean is that guy and at least for this album Blood Orange is too.
Musically Blood Orange is mix of old sounding funk, interesting rhythms and weird and satisfying crooning. (Crooning: hum or sing in a soft, low voice, especially in a sentimental manner). All with the proper amount of smooth jazz popping up in the right place.
Sandra’s Smile is that standard. The song is very much like the music I’m listening to right now from 2013’s Cupid Deluxe. The videography is what grabs me in this one. There’s nothing new here but the music matches the mood of the video. Black and White, dancing (weird in some cases and standard street faire in others), pictures of the city and snippet of city life. Concrete and breaking and as a contrast despite the slowness of the song the many of the dancers and people featured in it are clearly having a great time.
